Exploring the Link Between Tick-Borne Diseases and Musculoskeletal Health

In this cross-sectional study, the Johnston County Osteoarthritis (JoCo OA) project aimed to evaluate the potential association between prior exposure to tick-borne diseases (TBDs) and chronic musculoskeletal symptoms or osteoarthritis. TBDs, excluding Lyme disease, such as spotted fever group rickettsiosis (SFGR), ehrlichiosis, and galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-gal) syndrome, are a growing public health concern. Despite 50,000 cases of TBD being reported in the US in 2019, the study found no link between the presence of antibodies for Ehrlichia or Rickettsia (seropositivity) and chronic musculoskeletal symptoms or osteoarthritis. New UCLA-led research finds that infants born full term to mothers who were infected with COVID-19 during pregnancy had three times the risk of having respiratory distress compared with unexposed infants, even though they themselves were not infected with the virus. Robitussin Cough Syrups Have Been Recalled

On January 24, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Haleon, the distributor of Robitussin cough syrup, issued a voluntary recall of eight lots of Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Nighttime Adult medications due to potential microbial contamination. If you have used any recalled product, the FDA and Haleon advise stopping consumption immediately and contacting your doctor if any adverse reactions occur. Read more.

The oral cavity contains numerous microorganisms, including antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. These microorganisms can be transmitted via respiratory particles from patients to healthcare providers and vice versa during dental care. ANA Applauds CDC’s Return of HICPAC Recommendations

In November, the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) shared recommendations for updating guidance on preventing transmission of pathogens in healthcare settings with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The guidelines do not specify that an N95 respirator is preferable to a loose-fitting surgical mask. Additionally, the recommendation fails to urge nurses and healthcare professionals to wear N95 masks as a minimum level of protection when working with patients who have suspected or confirmed respiratory infections.
